Internship Program

As of 2017, we are not accepting applications for the Internship Program. Please check back frequently for more updates.

Bio-Waves, Inc. offers college students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain experience in the field of marine bioacoustics through their research internship program. Interns with Bio-Waves will work alongside staff researchers to analyze acoustic data using a variety of different tools and software programs. Participants are trained in all the necessary concepts and skills, and are exposed to the following topics:

The course focuses on the following topics:

  • The physics of underwater sound
  • Why and how Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) is used to study marine mammals
  • Marine mammal vocalization characterization
  • How to display and interpret sound visually
  • How to use various types of software to detect, localize and classify sounds produced by marine mammals
  • How to use acoustic analysis software to process acoustic data

Internships involve the use of specialized acoustic analysis software (e.g., Raven, Triton and PAMGuard) to analyze sound data, and participants are trained thoroughly in the use of these programs throughout the internship period. At the conclusion of the internship, participants have the chance to apply what they have learned either by co-authoring a poster for a scientific meeting, or by producing a report describing the analysis and general findings of the work that they were involved in. Internship positions are available in the fall (September to December) and spring (February to May), with interns working 16 to 20 hours per week. A more intensive summer internship program runs from May/June to August, with interns expected to work 24 to 40 hours per week (depending on the projects available during the summer period).

Meet Our Most Recent Intern!

Gabriela Alongi is a recent graduate of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, with an MRes in Marine Mammal Science, and a B.S. in Aquatic Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She joined the Bio-Waves Team as an intern in September 2015, and has since been conducting acoustic analysis on several projects, including a study of the effects of Navy sonar on marine mammal species.
